Orphan is a psychological horror/ mystery English movie released in 2009. Orphan (2009) is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra who is also known for The Shallows (2016). The movie story is written by Alex Mace it achieved several awards & nominations for its unique plot and clever direction with professional acting.
Orphan (2009) Ending Explained

Kate and John are a happily married couple and they have two children Daniel and Max. Her daughter Max is unable to speak.
Kate becomes pregnant for the third time. She is going to give birth to another daughter which makes them all so happy. Kate already decides to name her Jessica. But unfortunately, Kate Stillbirths.
This loss is particularly making a rough life on Kate and day after day it is growing. In this situation, the couple decided to adopt a child from an orphanage. Hence, they visit the sanatorium and meet Esther first time. She is a 9-year-old Russian girl with beautiful eyes. They like Esther for her cuteness and intellectual behavior with politeness.
Kate’s family adopt Esther and bring her home.
In the beginning, everything is going nice and smooth except for Daniel. He is not comfortable with Esther, but Max is good.
A few days later an awkward situation occurred night. Kate & Jhon are close in their bed and flowing on their sensational time. Suddenly Kate noticed Esther was looking at them outside the door. Kate felt very uncomfortable about this incident. The next morning, Kate wants to talk to Esther about that, but she becomes surprised to hear Esther that she already has enough knowledge about love-making.
One day, Max and Daniel are playing outside their house when suddenly Daniel shot a pigeon. Daniel feels guilty the pigeon is hurt. But Esther slew the injured pigeon in front of them. Daniel and Max are become so sad and surprised that day. In school, Esther hurt a classmate very badly when they attempted to bully her.
One Morning, sister Abigail comes to visit Kate’s family and notify them about the unwanted things usually happening around Esther. When sister Abigail is about to return, Esther trapped her crush on the road while driving the car. Next Esther kills sister Abigail with the help of a hammer. She forces Max to help her to hide her sister’s body otherwise she will kill her too. After hiding the body Esther clean the pieces of evidence. Daniel witnesses them from the treehouse, so Esther threatened Daniel too not to tell his parents anything.
Kate noticed that Esther’s behavior is becoming mysterious day by day. Kate talks to John about it. John tells Esther to do something very pleasant for Kate. Esther cut out the white rose plants which were planted at the grave of Jessica. By seeing this Kate became furious and grabbed her arm roughly but Esther broke her arm and asked for help from John. Kate is innocent, but John is also blind to recognize that. Kate’s therapist believes that Kate starts drinking again, but in reality, she is not. They also suggest John send Kate to stay in a mental asylum.
After some days, when Daniel learns about sister Abigail’s death from Max’s drawing, he wants to expose Esther. So, he and Max go to his treehouse. At that moment Esther set on fire to the treehouse and attempt to kill Daniel. But due to Max, Daniel survived but was injured very badly.
After this incident, Kate shouts at Esther to stay away from her kids. But she holds back and calms down. That night Esther tries to spoil drunk John. Because he threatened to send Esther back to the orphanage. Lastly, he realizes that Kate’s doubt about Esther is true.
Dr. Varava of Saarni Institute confirmed to Kate that Esther is a 33-year-old woman named Leena Klammer. She is from Estonia. Leena has Hyperpituitarism, a hormonal disorder that causes dwarfism. That’s why she looks like a little girl. Leena was so dangerous she killed all seven people including the members of her previous family.
Kate reaches home from the hospital and found John is killed and Esther opens fire at Max. Kate and Max try to escape from Esther, but she attacks them near the ice pond.
At this point, Max finds a gun and tries to shoot Esther. But she missed and a bullet hit the ice. Then the ice breaks and a hole are made in it. Kate and Esther drowned in the water. Kate somehow came out of the water. Leena desperately wants to help Kate to bring her back from the water. But Kate kicked hard and broke her neck. As a result, Leena drowned.
